When a Dragon and a Griffin live hand-in-hand, humanity will threaten the magic of their land.

I snuffled in my sleep, rolling onto my side. I could smell something good in the air, but I couldn’t work out what it was. I’d smelt it before, but not in such a large volume. If only I could work out what it was…

Karla started to scream. I groaned, rolling onto my belly and yawning. I opened my eyes then rubbed them. The world was so foggy this morning.

    “Dacia! Help!”

The panicked tone of Karla’s scream cut through the sleep-fog in my brain. I stood up, peering through the fog, and trotted up the stairs. They started to give way with my small-but-still-heavy dragon shape, so I tapped my dragonstone and shrank into my human shape.

The smoke hit me and I burst into choking gags. The scent hadn’t registered as a dragon, but now I understood. The house was burning down.

“Dacia, please help!” Taya cried desperately as I ran up the stairs, almost tripping over Karla’s sprawled body, unconscious at the top of the staircase.

    “Taya! Come to the stairs!”

Taya stumbled towards me. I heaved the unconscious Karla to her feet, then dragged her to the stairs.

“Taya, grab my shoulder and stay with me,” I ordered, pulling Karla up into my arms, like a sleeping child.

Taya’s hand landed on my bare shoulder and I started off down the stairs, Taya stumbling after me. The pair of us coughed roughly in the smoke.

I reached the door outside. Taya tried to open it, but it wouldn’t move. Taya took hold of her mother and I tried to open the door. It moved only a little. Someone had blocked it off from outside.
