Take an order from the Committee of Public Safety he can’t refuse and add an expedition made up of an apprentice wizard still wet behind his drooping ears and a teenage elf who just happens to be the favorite niece of a high-ranking CPS agent and what could go wrong?

A lot. With no idea where he is going, what he is looking for, or who is supposed to be trying to stop them, PI Randy is set for a typical trip where things can only go wrong.

To make things worse, their cover story is that they are making a film, about butterflies, of all things. Exotic locations, exotic villains: who could ask for anything more to break up the monotony that started out as a typical day at the office?

Randy could, if he had the freedom of choice.

    EXCERPT

    “You are Randolf C. Aloysius.”

It didn’t appear to be a question.

“You are coming with us, now.” The words vibrated as though the speaker practiced at the bottom of a deep well.

Firm hands fastened on either arm, lifted me from my comfortable chair, and set me on shaky, flat feet. My limbs returned to a rag-doll semblance of life. My less-than-nimble brain wondered about going for Bess in the shoulder holster.

    “Don’t,” boomed inside my head.

Besides, both arms were still pinned at my sides. Slowly, I managed to move my head enough to get a better look at one of my visitors. No taller than me, with a black mask completely covering the face, probably to avoid the gas now disbursing out the open window. Heavy black gloves extending from the voluminous sleeves completed what I could see of its outfit. It was a he. A wild, possibly unjustified guess, based only on the strength of the fingers wrapped around my upper arms. Besides, thinking of it as he meant I was less likely to hesitate if we arrived at an emergency. The sepulchral voice could be modified.

I loosened my tongue. “I’m not going anywhere until you tell me what this is all about. And if you harm Bertha I will kill you…slowly.” Brave words that tumbled out like dry cereal into an empty bowl, especially considering my situation.

“She will not be harmed…if you come with us quietly.” The grips tightened. “She will not remember a thing.”
