Anton and Lenora Boudreaux have settled into an idyllic cottage overlooking San Francisco Bay. They’ve left trouble behind them and found happily ever after—family, friends, and a business that has every expectation of being successful. Until the Willow sails into port.

The captain of Willow, Jacob Lowell, is privy to secrets that threaten Lenora’s reputation and Anton’s life. When Anton sails to Seattle on a business enterprise, Jacob tries to blackmail Lenora, threatening to expose all he knows and forces her to make decisions that will test her love of Anton and her life with him.

    Excerpt:

The phaeton and driver had already left. I considered going down the hill to the Mathers, but I hated to bother them at this late hour. I told myself it was nothing, some trifle or oversight, and I was making far too much of it. Still, I crossed the threshold with some care and then, despite the warning, was so shocked I dropped the blueprint I carried under my arm.

On my settee sat Jacob Lowell as though he were an invited guest. He sneered at my dropped parcel and came over to pick it up. Instead of handing it back to me, he unrolled the paper.

This proprietary action served to take me from being frightened to being furious. I snatched the blueprint from his grasp, tearing it at the corner. “What is the meaning of this? How dare you walk into my home unannounced.” I rerolled my treasure.

Jacob sneered yet again. “Protecting stolen goods, are we?”

“Not stolen.” I felt little need to defend myself further and put the print down on the table. “Please leave.”

Jacob came up behind me, pinning me between his body and the table. “Is that any way to treat an old friend, Lenora?” At close range, his breath smelled of whiskey. Still, he was someone I had known since childhood. I thought perhaps I could count on him to act as though we were, indeed, old friends.

    “Why are you here, Jacob?”

He took my hair between his fingers. “Sweet girl. I have often thought of you. The softness of your lips and your sweet young body. Wasted on a scoundrel.”

A Great Read.

In "All Things Returned" Ute Carbone creates a historical romance combining the true flavor of the period while using characters who have battled to have the time and space to enjoy a happy and peaceful life. Told from the point of view of the heroine you experience her decisions and her reasoning while she tries to stay true to the culture of the time. As she faces betrayal, blackmail, and false accusations, you feel her anguish, along with the feelings of neglect as she waits for her hero and a rescue which may not arrive in time. A great read.--Allison Knight, bestselling author
